Let’s talk about a subject you might not have given much thought to, but it’s essential to understand—how to fire a client. Hopefully, you’ll never find yourself in this situation, but sometimes personalities clash, and it’s necessary to end the relationship. Recently, one of my agents asked about the procedure for this, and it’s crucial to know the proper steps.

First and foremost, you can’t just fire a client on your own. As an agent, the broker owns every buyer and seller, so you must contact your broker first. Explain to them that the client relationship isn’t working and request to release the client or have someone else work with them. Your broker will then decide whether to terminate the relationship completely or reassign the client to another agent who might be a better fit.

You may discuss terms like referral fees with your broker, but it’s vital to involve them in the conversation. Remember, the listing and buyer agreements are with the brokerage, not you individually. It’s always better to end a relationship on good terms than to risk negative reviews or comments.
